Personal
I’ve been sailing my entire life, starting on a Sailfish that my dad built in our living room. From there, I raced dinghies and keelboats through college before buying our first J/24 on San Francisco Bay in 1992.
After moving back to Portland, we teamed up with longtime boat partner Doug Schenk on his J/24 for several years. Together, we also raced extensively aboard the J/130 Orizaba, including the 2006 Pacific Cup. That race set the hook.
After Orizaba was sold, Doug and I partnered with Matt Davis on a J/105 so we could continue racing offshore. We enjoyed great times on that boat, including the 2014 and 2022 Pacific Cups, where we were fortunate to win our class both times. Eventually it was time for an upgrade.
In 2023, my son discovered a Club Swan 42 in Acapulco that seemed like an ideal fit for the partnership. We trucked the boat north and completed preparations just in time for the 2023 PNW Offshore Race. Despite scrambling to make the start, we managed to finish first to finish and first overall.
Since then, we’ve campaigned the new Free Bowl of Soup throughout the Pacific Northwest, competing in additional PNW Offshore races, Swiftsure, Race Week, and the incredible Van Isle 360.
